Michigan State could have four representatives in Indianapolis next month for the NFL Combine. The league announced Justin Layne, LJ Scott, Khari Willis, and Felton Davis III all received invites to participate in the scouting event at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The 2018-2019 NFL season has officially ended, which means all eyes are on the upcoming Draft in April. The Michigan State Spartans own the third-longest draft streak in all of college football by having at least one player selected to the pros in each of the last 78 years.

It’s been no secret Michigan State’s offense has failed to live up to expectations this season. A mix of injuries and turnovers have plagued a group that returned every starter but one from a 10-win team in 2017, one that was thought to be a potential frontrunner for a Big Ten title. Six games in, though, the 24th-ranked Spartans (4-2, 2-1 Big Ten) have not been ruled out of anything.

“Felton is a freaking man among boys,” Lewerke said. “All you have to do is throw it up to him and he’ll get the job done.”The Spartans realized early that Davis could be special as he saw action as a true freshman in 2015 in seven games, getting his only two catches in the Big Ten Championship game against Iowa and the College Football Playoff against Alabama.

Michigan State’s offense hasn’t been prolific this season. The Spartans are averaging 26.2 points per game. They’ve run for 123 yards per game and have dealt with injuries along the offensive line, at receiver and in the backfield. Michigan State, though, remains successful at moving the ball through the air. The Spartans rank 34th in the nation with 271.5 passing yards per game and have a talented quarterback in Brian Lewerke.

As Michigan State football faced a late one-point deficit against Utah State, quarterback Brian Lewerke went to a group as reliable as any, his wide receivers. The sequence started with a first-down catch by Cody White despite a defender draped all over him. But even after a quick pass to Darrell Stewart Jr. in motion after, MSU was still out of field goal range. Then, Lewerke connected with a sprawling Felton Davis III all the way to Utah State’s 21-yard line. Perhaps the highlight of the game.

Center Brian Allen saved Michigan State’s streak of having a player selected in every common NFL Draft since 1967 (post-AFL-NFL merger) last year. It’s now well documented that Michigan State returned just 12 catches heading into 2017. Not touchdowns or players, catches. It doesn’t take much to imagine how excited MSU wide receivers coach Terrence Samuel is at the prospect of returning his three top pass-catchers this fall, including potential All-American Felton Davis III and rising sophomore Cody White.

If the Spartans are forced to lean heavily on the trio of Felton Davis III, Darrell Stewart Jr., and Cody White, the good news is they can collectively bring a little bit of everything to an offense. Davis is the big target, at 6-foot-4, and he’s MSU’s top returning receiver with 776 yards and nine touchdowns a year ago.

Felton Davis and Darrell Stewart Jr. had both already been at Michigan State for two years but combined for just three starts. Cody White was a true freshman who had been practicing with the team for barely a month before making his college debut. All three factored into the uncertain outlook at wide receiver for the Spartans last season as the team brought back just 20 total receptions from the returners and turned to a trio of new full-time starters.

Davis III decided to return for his senior season to mature as a player and put up even better numbers — his lofty goal is 100 receptions for 1,000-plus yards in 2018. If Davis III can reach that 1,000-yard mark, he would join an exclusive club at Michigan State under Mark Dantonio. Can he become Dantonio’s best wideout yet, though?

Brian Lewerke had plenty of options in his first full season as Michigan State’s starting quarterback, from several running backs to take his handoffs to a bevy of receivers to haul in his throws. The good news for the Spartans is most of that cast is back, including Lewerke, leading rusher LJ Scott and leading receiver Felton Davis III.
