Eron Harris told me recently the biggest misconception about him is that people think he’s selfish. “That’s the furthest thing away from the truth,” the Michigan State senior guard said. I don’t think we know Harris very well. We know his game. We see its flaws and strengths and the one-on-one elements that can be confused with selfishness. The former transfer from West Virginia was counted on to be one of Michigan State’s biggest scoring threats this season but has been plagued by inconsistency. That has not hurt his standing with his teammates, though, some who were brought to tears as Harris hit the floor with 9:18 left in the second half and screamed in pain after his right leg buckled. “It was really difficult,” freshman Miles Bridges said. “He’s like a big brother to me so I’m just praying for him, hoping everything goes well. I just gave him a hug.”

The injury looked very bad, but head coach Tom Izzo confirmed that he was at the arena still and walking on crutches. Izzo said it was a “badly sprained knee” and that the injury “isn’t anything great.” He is out for an unknown time, but Izzo admits that he will be out for a good portion of time.

The freshman forward grabbed one final rebound, pushed the ball up the court, then darted toward the basket. As Bridges bent his knees to take flight, the ball got stripped out of his hands. He tumbled toward the baseline, slamming shoulder-first into the padded basket stanchion. It was that kind of day.
Looking at box scores, the last six games for Michigan State’s Eron Harris haven’t been anything special. He scored in double figures once in that stretch, finished with nine another time and scored six points or fewer in the four other games. Outside of a 4-for-4 performance at Michigan, Harris hasn’t shot the ball particularly well even when he is looking to score, and turnovers have been a problem at times as a frustrating season offensively continues on for the senior guard.

It’s played 11.8 percent of MSU’s minutes. There have been varying forms of that lineup with Nick Ward, Cassius Winston, Matt McQuaid and Alvin Ellis III joining the rotation, but none have played more than 11 percent of the time together as a singular unit.

For the first time in a long time, Michigan State’s Matt McQuaid enters tonight’s game against Nebraska (7 p.m., ESPN) with some confidence. The sophomore guard has been struggling most of the season and headed into Sunday’s showdown with Michigan shooting just 26.6 percent from the field, including 33.3 percent from deep, in his last five games. Against the Wolverines, though, head coach Tom Izzo called a set play for McQuaid in the first half, and he delivered by drilling a corner 3-pointer. He went on to hit both of his 3-point attempts in the second half to finish a perfect 3-for-3 from long range for nine points.
