ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said earlier this month that the Spartans “will have several” NFL prospects next year at this time. And depending on how this season goes for a number of MSU’s juniors, it could be more.

Although the NFL Draft just a couple days away, the buzz surrounding the 2018 NBA Draft is starting to pick up. With the impressive amount of talented players available in the 2018 NBA Draft — which will take place on June 21 — Sports Illustrated went through the process of ranking the players in its Top 100 big board. The big board was released on Tuesday morning, and Michigan State’s Jaren Jackson Jr. was featured high up on the list.

If you want to be a defensive back or a wideout, go to Michigan State. Mark Dantonio’s program has been proficient in producing players at both spots over the last 10 years, with six receivers and six d-backs getting tabbed. On the other end of the spectrum, MSU has had just one linebacker taken since 2008: Greg Jones in 2011.

Brian Allen is Michigan State’s top NFL draft prospect. Whether the center gets picked or not will play out over three days and seven rounds in next month’s draft. For now, it’s all speculation and ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. is the guru of draft conjecture. During a conference call Wednesday afternoon, Kiper said he wouldn’t be shocked if Allen went undrafted but added “I could see him getting drafted fifth, sixth, seventh round.”

The NBA Draft is still a little over four months away, however, with the best talent in college on display, experts are already trying to figure out who will go where. Both sophomore Miles Bridges and freshman Jaren Jackson Jr. are expected to get drafted somewhere in the NBA lottery, among the first 14 picks. As everyone knows, a lot can change between now and July (thanks Miles!), but here is where experts think the Spartans will be headed.

Montae Nicholson made an unexpected decision to leave Michigan State a year early for the NFL, but the move ended up landing him as one of the first picks on the third day of the draft. Nicholson was picked in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft on Saturday afternoon, going No. 123 overall to the Washington Redskins. He becomes highest-picked former Michigan State safety in the NFL Draft since 2006, when Eric Smith went in the third round.

Montae Nicholson was four-star safety recruit coming out of high school where he was the number one ranked high school player in the state of Pennsylvania according to Prepstar, who also listed him as a top 100 national recruit. He was also a 3x state champion in track and field (60 meters, 110 hurdles and 400 relay), as well as a 4th place finisher in the long jump.

Michigan State’s streak of producing first-round NFL Draft picks is over. The first round of the 2017 draft came and went on Thursday night, with no former Michigan State players hearing their names called. That marked the first time since 2013 that the team hasn’t had a former player picked in the first round. The streak was the longest of its kind the school had produced in 25 years.
