Almost a decade after degenerative knee pain and multiple surgeries forced Delvon Roe to prematurely end his once-promising basketball career, the former Michigan State big man has become an NBA veteran after all. Well, sort of. Roe plays the role of Dante, an NBA veteran for the fictional Los Angeles Vipers and one of the lead character’s best friends.

Former Michigan State basketball player Delvon Roe came oh so close in back-to-back years. In his first two college basketball seasons, he and the rest of the Spartans were playing for a national title. As a freshman, in 2009, Roe was 40 minutes away from winning a championship in Detroit. A year later, a loss to Butler in the national semifinals ended his sophomore campaign.

Delvon Roe played three seasons for Michigan State, making the NCAA tournament all three years. As a freshman in 2008-09, he averaged 5.6 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and was named to the Big Ten’s All-Freshman team. That season ended with Michigan State making the Final Four, held in Detroit’s Ford Field. Now, Rose shares the story of that wild run with the Free Press.
