Another year, another Michigan State Spartans victory over the Michigan Wolverines. That marks eight wins in the past 10 meetings for Michigan State, and head coach Mark Dantonio is now 8-3 overall against his bitter rival. This past Saturday’s game just had the feels of an upset waiting to happen, and it did, as Michigan State went into Ann Arbor to face the No. 7 team in the nation and walked out with a victory.

A text message popped into Mark Staten’s phone, a memory of years gone by and a reminder of what’s still to come. It was sent by Matt Allen. The Michigan State offensive lineman attached a photo of himself as a chubby, young teenager. He was standing with oldest brother, Jack, when he was about the same age at Spartan Stadium. Now, it’s Matt’s turn to put on the uniform and play alongside middle brother, senior Brian, on that same field.

If Michigan State is to return to some semblance of its famous “No Fly Zone” secondary, it will be with some experienced new starters at safety and potentially a few young players at the corners in 2017. That’s how Michigan State’s secondary looked when players left for summer break earlier this month, in the middle of an offseason in which three starters must be replaced.
