Former Michigan State offensive lineman David Beedle is keeping a diary of everything he goes through as he prepares for this month’s NFL draft. Beedle, a Clarkston native, played in 36 career games for the Spartans but missed time in 2018 with a dislocated left elbow. Here’s his second installment, as told to Detroit Lions beat writer Dave Birkett.

The Michigan State football program hosted its annual Pro Day at the Duffy Daugherty Building on Monday. Eight players from the 2018 team – offensive guard David Beedle, linebacker Andrew Dowell, cornerback Justin Layne, defensive tackle Gerald Owens, linebacker Jon Reschke, running back LJ Scott, tight end Matt Sokol and safety Khari Willis – auditioned in front of National Football League scouts and personnel in preparation for the upcoming NFL Draft.

Michigan State’s injury problems continue to mount, and offensive lineman David Beedle is the latest player who will miss extended time. “David Beedle will be out for probably about a month,” coach Mark Dantonio said during a teleconference Sunday night.

David Beedle logged 550 snaps last season. The Michigan State offensive lineman played both guard spots and battled through a knee injury but didn’t allow a single sack all year. That was a statistic Beedle didn’t need to be told. “I definitely knew that one,” he said.

Jon Reschke’s return to Michigan State’s roster was described by coach Mark Dantonio last week as a “step-by-step process.” Julian Major’s spot on the team was “in flux” after he left the program in the spring. However, both Reschke and Major were on the field Thursday morning when Michigan State had its first practice of fall camp.

Michigan State lost just one senior starter on offense from last season, but it was a substantial departure. Center Brian Allen, a three-year starter with experience at all three interior positions, was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the fourth round of the NFL draft. He was a team captain, the anchor of the offensive line and his spot is the most difficult for the Spartans to replace heading into this season.

David Beedle will be the elder statesman on Michigan State’s offensive line this fall. The fifth-year senior also earned lofty praise heading into his final season with the Spartans. Beedle was graded as tied for third in pass blocking efficiency for all guards in the nation eligible for the 2019 NFL draft by Pro Football Focus.

The start to the season went as planned for David Beedle. The redshirt junior started the first three games at right guard as Michigan State attempted to solidify a reworked offensive line. Then he hit a snag and missed the first three games of Big Ten play due to injury. “It definitely sucked, obviously it wasn’t ideal,” Beedle said after practice Tuesday night.

Michigan State is coming off a 14-10 upset win at Michigan last week.The No. 21 Spartans (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) will return to the road on Saturday (8 p.m., BTN) to face Minnesota (3-2, 0-2), which will be without four starters due to injury. Michigan State has injury issues of its own.

Michigan State locked up the result it needed with a 17-10 win against Iowa on Saturday in East Lansing. The Spartans’ defense was dominant, especially against the run. However, their own rushing attack was bottled up as well.

MSU’s offensive line is mostly young and relatively unproven. But there is enough talent and experience to give the Spartans hope. Of the five expected Week 1 starters, three are first- or second-year players, yet two of them — sophomores Cole Chewins at left tackle and Tyler Higby at right guard — saw substantial playing time last season. The anchor of this group is senior captain and center Brian Allen, who could also move to guard if need be.

Michigan State offensive line coach Mark Staten encouraged his players over the off-season. Now, he hopes it leads to better play this fall, especially from David Beedle and Luke Campbell on the right side of the line, as Michigan State tries to rebound from a disastrous 3-9 finish last season.

There are other, more pressing issues hanging over the football program at the moment, but when it comes to on the field fixes that needs to be made, O-Line is tied with D-Line for priority number one.

With Michigan State practices being closed all spring, we don’t have an entirely clear idea of how some key position battles are shaking out very early in the process. But we’ll potentially get our first glimpse of the pecking order at certain positions during Saturday’s spring game. Following a season like 2016, there should be opportunities at plenty of spots, but some are more wide open — and important for MSU’s success — than others.

As 2016 came to a close and the looking ahead to 2017 began, most everyone thought they had a pretty good guess as to who would be starting at both tackle spots for Michigan State next season.

Mark Staten reflected back the spring of 2013, after Michigan State’s offensive line trudged through a 2012 season filled with injuries and lack of depth. The Spartans’ coaches theorized somebody they didn’t expect would come back that fall and become a difference-maker. Back then, it was Jack Conklin. Staten wants his young offensive linemen to learn from that story. A 3-9 season and attrition along the trenches will provide plenty of opportunity.
