  • Mark Dantonio shuffles Michigan State offensive staff

    Dantonio announced on Thursday a restructuring of the offensive staff, moving quarterbacks coach Brad Salem to sole offensive coordinator while co-offensive coordinator Dave Warner will become the quarterbacks coach. Jim Bollman will take over the offensive line duties while current offensive line coach Mark Staten, also the associate head coach, will take over tight ends and continue as the recruiting coordinator.

    After a season in which Michigan State’s offense ranked among the worst in the nation, coach Mark Dantonio decided to make changes. Dantonio announced a restructuring of his entire offensive staff Thursday night. It was the biggest shakeup of his 12-season tenure at Michigan State but a reshuffling of personnel already with the program instead of an infusion of new staff members.

    Michigan State football’s offensive staff is undergoing a major restructuring for 2019. But no coaches are leaving the Spartans. Mark Dantonio said Thursday that Brad Salem will take over as Michigan State’s offensive coordinator. Dave Warner and Jim Bollman, who previously shared the role, were reassigned to position coaches. “This is probably the most significant change we have had in my 12 years here,” Dantonio said. “But it is warranted.”

    Michigan State’s offense will be under new management in 2019. MSU head coach Mark Dantonio announced Thursday a series of coaching staff changes on that side of the ball. Dave Warner has been stripped of his play-calling duties, and former quarterbacks coach Brad Salem has been installed as offensive coordinator and running backs coach. Warner will return to coaching quarterbacks, which he did at MSU from 2007-12.

     

     

  • Connor Heyward: Don’t blame Dave Warner

    Sophomore running back Connor Heyward said after practice Tuesday that they are not correct in assigning blame. “I don’t think we haven’t been able to drive the ball, because we’ve been able to. It’s just whenever we get in the red zone,” said Heyward, who had 177 all-purpose yards at Nebraska. “I don’t like when people are on Twitter saying it’s coach Warner and whatnot, because he’s called good plays. We’re just not getting in the end zone. We’re dropping balls, I missed that one hole.

  • Dave Warner takes blame for Michigan State’s offense but there are widespread problems

    “We came into this season with high expectations and with people talking about the potential of this offense and potential doesn’t mean anything unless you follow through with it and reach that potential,” Michigan State co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach Dave Warner said. “And, obviously we haven’t. We continue to try and find ways to get there because we have good football players on our team, we have good players on offense and we’re not playing up to our potential. Hey, I’m the coordinator, so it falls back on me.”

    Michigan State assistant coaches Dave Warner and Mike Tressel spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon, to review the Spartans’ 31-20 win over Central Michigan, and preview this Saturday’s game as No. 20/19 Michigan State hosts Northwestern on Saturday, Oct. 6 at noon in Spartan Stadium in MSU’s 103rd Homecoming game. The contest will be televised on FS1.

    “The word potential has been out there since January and we certainly haven’t reached that yet, certainly haven’t come anywhere close to that,” Warner said Wednesday afternoon. “We talk about what we’re capable of as an offense and I think we all know that we haven’t gotten there yet.”

    “First of all, on game day itself, I allow our coordinators to make these decisions,” Dantonio said. “Now, I’m gonna always enter my opinions — maybe after the fact, before the fact, well before the fact — but I’m not gonna disrupt play-calling. I think we get the play in fast, that’s as important as anything. Give our players time to digest what’s being called. It’s very difficult. Everybody across the nation is making these decisions in 20 to 30 seconds. Some work, some don’t. A lot of that depends on execution, repetition and then what’s the defense being able to do.”

    Michigan State’s spring game on Saturday will once again pit the offense versus the defense. Asked what he’s looking forward to seeing the most, Dave Warner gave the exact answer expected from an offensive play caller. “Getting the ball in the end zone,” said Warner, Michigan State’s co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach, who knows that didn’t happen enough last season.
