    As Michigan State football faced a late one-point deficit against Utah State, quarterback Brian Lewerke went to a group as reliable as any, his wide receivers. The sequence started with a first-down catch by Cody White despite a defender draped all over him. But even after a quick pass to Darrell Stewart Jr. in motion after, MSU was still out of field goal range. Then, Lewerke connected with a sprawling Felton Davis III all the way to Utah State’s 21-yard line. Perhaps the highlight of the game.

However, there was a highlight-reel play from redshirt junior wide receiver Darrell Stewart Jr. the program shared via Twitter. Stewart elevated, fought off contact from safety David Dowell and used his left hand to haul in a pass from Lewerke.

    If the Spartans are forced to lean heavily on the trio of Felton Davis III, Darrell Stewart Jr., and Cody White, the good news is they can collectively bring a little bit of everything to an offense. Davis is the big target, at 6-foot-4, and he’s MSU’s top returning receiver with 776 yards and nine touchdowns a year ago.

    Felton Davis and Darrell Stewart Jr. had both already been at Michigan State for two years but combined for just three starts. Cody White was a true freshman who had been practicing with the team for barely a month before making his college debut. All three factored into the uncertain outlook at wide receiver for the Spartans last season as the team brought back just 20 total receptions from the returners and turned to a trio of new full-time starters.

About 1,200 miles south of Spartan Stadium, Stewart’s family will attempt to gather together, as usual, to watch him play on TV. This time it will likely require special travel accommodations. That would be a boat.

There now appear to be three leaders for the position in Sowards and fellow wide receivers Darrell Stewart Jr. and Laress Nelson.

    Darrell Stewart Jr. didn’t see it coming. As the sophomore wide receiver wrapped up his interviews Monday at Michigan State’s football media day, his position coach came up behind him. Terrence Samuel pulled him in and gave him a big smooch on the side of the head. “I love him,” Samuel turned and told reporters as Stewart cracked up. “I love him.”

    With all the hubbub surrounding the quarterback position, Michigan State’s inexperience at wide receiver seems to have been overshadowed. But it is every bit as important as who is delivering the ball. The Spartans completed 211 passes in 2016. Seniors caught 133 of them. Underclassman running backs and tight ends caught 25 more still.
