The Michigan State Spartans stand at 4-2 early in the 2017-18 season, including an impressive 4-0 in the friendly confines of Munn Ice Arena. Now no one is saying the first three series; Bowling Green, Western Michigan and Lake Superior State is not exactly a murderer’s row of opponents, and things will get harder quick (beginning with a series at Minnesota this weekend), but this is still a start that should be recognized

Michigan State will open its 77th season by taking on Bowling Green for the first time since the final year of the CCHA in 2013 … MSU is 41-30-5 in season openers and is meeting BGSU in a season-opener for the first time since 1994 (W, 6-3).

Danton Cole, Michigan State’s new hockey coach, believes Wednesday’s Green and White intrasquad scrimmage at Munn Arena served its purpose. Cole and his coaching staff got their first look at the 2017-18 Spartans under game conditions in a unique format and came away with a positive assessment. “It’s never going to be as sharp right now as you want it to be, but we got everybody into every situation,” Cole said after the Green team edged the White, 3-2, in the modified two-period scrimmage. “Everything we wanted to get out of it, we did.’’

When Michigan State plays its first game of the regular season on Oct. 13 at Bowling Green, senior Ed Minney wants to lead his teammates out of the dressing room and onto the ice as the Spartans’ starting goaltender. One night later, his goal is to be back between the pipes as the starter in MSU’s home opener, also against the Falcons. The thing is, sophomore John Lethemon wants the same thing – to be the Spartans’ starter, the team’s No. 1 goalie.

It was a good offseason for first-year MSU hockey coach Danton Cole. He and his staff were able to get the ball rolling on installing new systems and expectations for his players; while getting them acclimated to the new style of Spartan hockey. All of this was done despite the limited time allowed to practice.

Growing up, I lived at Munn Ice Arena.When the Spartans were playing at home, it was three-day weekends at the rink. Friday and Saturday night, we were there, cheering for the Green and White. Then on Sunday, it was our turn – GLAHA travel games were played on Sunday afternoons right on the same sheet of ice.
