The 6-foot-7, 250-pound right-hander, who played at Michigan State, has plowed through the minors to this point. He has a 1.58 ERA in 22 games at Iowa, the Cubs’ Triple-A affiliate, with 24 hits allowed in 28 1/3 innings. He has struck out 34 and walked 14, which has led to a higher whip (1.34). He has three saves, a hold and a blown save.

Chicago Cubs’ prospect Dakota Mekkes had a heck of a July. In fact, it was about perfect for the former Jenison High School and Michigan State pitcher. As noted by Bleacher Nation, Mekkes, pitching for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in high Class A, did not give up a run in eight appearances. In 14 1/3 innings, he allowed eight hits, struck out 20 and walked four.
