Michigan State wide receivers coach Courtney Hawkins answered questions from reporters on a media teleconference on Wednesday afternoon. Hawkins talked about his transition to collegiate coaching, his initial thoughts on the Spartan wide receivers, and how past players welcomed him back to East Lansing.
There isn’t much Courtney Hawkins hadn’t accomplished on the football field. He was an All-Big Ten wide receiver at Michigan State, won a Big Ten championship under coach George Perles and his name still dots the program’s record books. After a nine-year career in the NFL, Hawkins returned to his hometown of Flint and led his alma mater, Beecher High, as its football coach and athletic director for 14 years.

Name a pro athlete that collected NFL paychecks for nine years — providing his family a comfortable life — but upon retirement from his playing days returned to his high school alma mater located in an impoverished urban neighborhood. In other words, identify a star athlete that was coddled in college and overpaid as a pro yet after all the pampering rejoined the real world. He took up the grind, toiling alongside underpaid and unappreciated teachers and coaches. It’s a short list, and that’s what makes Courtney Hawkins special.

Hawkins has never coached at the college level but has an impressive resume as a player. He still ranks sixth in Michigan State history in career receiving yards (2,210), eighth in receptions (138), tied for 16th in touchdown catches (12) and is sixth in kickoff return yards (1,571). Hawkins was picked in the second round of the 1992 draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and spent five seasons with the franchise before playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers his final four years in the NFL. He had 366 career catches for 4,573 and 18 touchdowns and expects that experience will be appreciated by his new players at Michigan State.

Mel Tucker is giving an in-state high school coach a major promotion. Flint Beecher head coach and Michigan State alumnus Courtney Hawkins has been hired as the Spartans’ new wide receivers coach, the program announced on Wednesday.

Few people if any know more about Michigan State’s basketball program and Jalen Terry’s individual game than Marquise Gray. Gray played for the Spartans from 2005-09 and is currently an assistant coach at Flint Beecher, where Terry will play for one more season before heading to Michigan State in the fall of 2020.
