  • Strong kicking game highlights Michigan State’s special teams but returns still questionable

    Matt Coghlin never saw the field as a true freshman while taking a redshirt. While watching him kick in practice that season, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio had his doubts about the new guy. Not anymore. Coghlin is now heading into his third season as a starter and is one of the best kickers in the nation. His confidence has grown and he gives the Spartans a reliable leg to put points on the board.

  • 2017 Michigan State football preview: The special teams

    MSU will have a new kicker for the first time since its Rose Bowl run four years ago. Redshirt freshman Matt Coghlin is expected to replace departing senior Michael Geiger. It appears Coglin will get the first crack at the job, but Western Michigan transfer Brett Scanlon, a senior walk-on, and true freshman Cole Hahn will be standing by should Coghlin struggle. Scanlon or Hahn is likely to handle kickoffs from the get-go

  • No one has leg up in Michigan State’s kicker battle

    With so many games coming down to the wire, getting consistent kicking is key and the Spartans have quite the competition. Redshirt freshman Matt Coghlin might be the leader at this point, but fifth-year senior Brett Scanlon and true freshman Cole Hahn are also in the mix as well as freshman Jack McKenna, who also is punting. Special teams coordinator Mark Snyder said late last week things were too close to call.

  • Michigan State opportunity for new kicker Cole Hahn came ‘completely out of the blue’

    “It completely came out of the blue,” Hahn said of the opportunity from Michigan State. “I had no idea whatsoever that they were going to contact me. I didn’t expect anybody to contact me. Once signing day happened, I was dead set that Iowa was where I was going to hand up.”

  • 2017 kicker Cole Hahn flips commitment from Iowa to Michigan State

    Cole Hahn, a 3-star kicker from Des Moines, Iowa, de-committed from Iowa and committed to Michigan State on Thursday morning. Hahn made the announcement on his Twitter page and said he would be on scholarship with the Spartans. Hahn did not have an initial scholarship offer from Iowa and never signed a National Letter of Intent, allowing him to switch commitments so late in the process.
