2017 Michigan State football preview: The offensive line
MSU’s offensive line is mostly young and relatively unproven. But there is enough talent and experience to give the Spartans hope. Of the five expected Week 1 starters, three are first- or second-year players, yet two of them — sophomores Cole Chewins at left tackle and Tyler Higby at right guard — saw substantial playing time last season. The anchor of this group is senior captain and center Brian Allen, who could also move to guard if need be.

Cole Chewins works to unite Spartans’ offensive line
Cole Chewins’ humble beginnings at Michigan State have set him up for a career of proactivity. Walk-ons can’t expect anything to be given to them. Sure, Chewins was offered a scholarship that would go into effect after the 2015 season, which he redshirted as a first-year offensive tackle from Clarkston, Mich. But that offer, in the most literal sense, wasn’t much more than a handshake deal. No paperwork guaranteed he ever would go on scholarship.

Michigan State football hopes it found its left side of offensive line
Run, left. Run, left. Run, left.Success. Over Tyler Higby. Around Cole Chewins. Michigan State’s run game looked like it had found its path to success against Rutgers, and it meant carrying the ball behind the blocks of two redshirt freshmen on the left side of the offensive line. Then Higby broke his right ankle, ending a promising season prematurely. But the work both the left guard and left tackle Chewins got in playing next to each other has Michigan State optimistic for new quarterback Brian Lewerke’s blindside protection.

Two Michigan State football players named Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award recipients
A pair of Michigan State football players were honored for their commitment in the classroom. Cole Chewins, a redshirt sophomore offensive tackle, and Chase Gianacakos, a redshirt junior offensive lineman, were named Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award recipients for 2016-17, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Michigan State has faith in young players on rebuilt offensive line
One of Mark Dantonio’s surprise announcements following the Michigan State spring game last month was that offensive lineman Luke Campbell had “solidified” himself at right tackle. Campbell redshirted in 2016, his first season on campus, but impressed coaches enough during the practices that season and the offseason to earn himself the starting job by the end of spring practice.

New additions move quickly onto Michigan State’s offensive line
Mark Staten reflected back the spring of 2013, after Michigan State’s offensive line trudged through a 2012 season filled with injuries and lack of depth. The Spartans’ coaches theorized somebody they didn’t expect would come back that fall and become a difference-maker. Back then, it was Jack Conklin. Staten wants his young offensive linemen to learn from that story. A 3-9 season and attrition along the trenches will provide plenty of opportunity.
