Michigan State cornerback Chris Jackson has entered the NCAA transfer portal, 247Sports has learned. Jackson appeared in three games in two seasons for the Spartans. During his freshman season in 2019, Jackson played in one game and recorded one tackle. In his sophomore season, he appeared in two games but was productive. Jackson combined for nine tackles (two for loss) and one pass defensed.

The 2018 three-star cornerback from Lassiter High School in Marietta, Ga., was wrapping up an unofficial visit with his father in late February 2017 and driving around campus with Mark Dantonio. The Michigan State coach was talking about how long the recruiting process is when Jackson simplified it. “I just told him ‘I’m all set to go. I’m ready to commit,’” Jackson recalled.

Friday is Sept. 1. In college football recruiting, that’s a very big day. For those entering their senior years of high school, Sept. 1 is the first day college coaches can call recruits rather than the players having to initiate contact. It kicks off a furious few months of recruiting leading up to National Signing Day. Now those months will be shorter and even more furious as programs try to get prospects signed during the new early period, which begins Dec. 20.

Michigan State defensive backs coach Harlon Barnett had never heard of Chris Jackson when he visited Lassiter High School in Marietta, Ga., a year ago. Jackson had finished his sophomore year of football, which also happened to be his first year of football. Playing behind standout cornerbacks Tyriq Hardimon (Wake Forest signee) and Derrik Allen (Notre Dame commit), Jackson had only played about three series a game as Lassiter defensive backs coach Cedric Dickerson eased him into the action.
