Chris Frey arrived at Michigan State as soon as he could. As an early enrollee in the Spartans’ 2014 recruiting class, the three-star linebacker from Ohio went through winter conditioning at the Duffy Daugherty Building to lay the groundwork for a college career. A little more than four years later and on the same turf, Frey wore a white T-shirt with a green Spartan logo on it and the words “Pro Day 2018.”

Chris Frey always approached his Michigan State captaincy as a caretaker. That meant giving up some game reps to younger players. No. 24 MSU hosts the No. 7 Nittany Lions in a Big Ten East Division clash on Saturday, Nov. 4 at noon in Spartan Stadium. The game will be televised on FOX. The Spartans (6-2) had their four-game winning streak snapped in heartbreaking fashion last Saturday, falling at Northwestern in triple overtime, 39-31.

Senior linebacker Chris Frey, asked if growing up an Ohio State fan meant he hated the Wolverines from Day 1, responded, “From Day 1, yeah.” The media chuckled. Frey didn’t even crack a smile. It’s no joke to him. But even if a recruit knows enough about the rivalry to major in it, that won’t prepare him for the game itself. The magnitude can only be realized through repetitions.

The day of the Green and White game. The stadium was filled with thousands of Spartan fans anxiously waiting to get their tease of football season and a sneak peek of how their favorite team would be performing come September. Look a little closer and you notice a close-knit group of 80 people wearing a familiar name and number. Shirts with “Frey” and the number 23 filled a large section on the 50-yard line.
