    The door to immediate playing time for Carson Cooper next season isn’t wide open. More like slightly ajar. But the recent Michigan State basketball enrollee isn’t ready to shut the door on the possibility, either. A 6-foot-11 center from Jackson, Cooper signed with MSU fully intending to redshirt during the 2022-23 season. For now, at least, that’s still the plan. But since arriving on campus last month, Cooper said coach Tom Izzo and the rest of the staff have been “really excited with how much I’ve progressed so far.”

    Carson Cooper didn’t need an official visit to know what it would be like to return home. Cooper had spent the last year away from his home and family in Jackson while training at IMG Academy in Florida in the hopes of turning his considerable basketball potential into an opportunity to play big-time college hoops. That opportunity came suddenly last month when Michigan State started reaching out to the 6-foot-11 forward prospect to say they were interested in recruiting him.

    The departure of Marcus Bingham Jr. and Julius Marble II created a significant hole in Michigan State’s frontcourt, and on Sunday, the Spartans and coach Tom Izzo took a step toward filling that void. It might not provide immediate aid, but the commitment of 6-foot-11 Carson Cooper from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, on Sunday could certainly pay dividends in the long run.
