Wide receiver Cam Chambers is the latest Michigan State football player to enter the NCAA transfer portal, Spartan Tailgate has learned. He is the fifth Spartan player to seek a transfer since the start of the season.

Michigan State returns starters, experienced depth at WR this season
Stewart and White, both two-year starters, are back to lead the group and there’s depth behind them. It will be up to quarterback Brian Lewerke, who is looking to bounce back after a difficult season marred by a shoulder injury, and new offensive coordinator Brad Salem to get the most out of the receivers and stretch the field, which didn’t happen nearly enough last fall.

Michigan State’s potential breakout players this season
Heading into last season, defensive end Kenny Willekes was a former walk-on who had bounced around positions and appeared in just one game. Wide receiver Felton Davis had only 14 catches for 200 yards and one touchdown in his first two seasons. Joe Bachie had never started a game but was pegged as the Spartans’ starting middle linebacker of the future.

The light turned on for Cam Chambers heading into his third season
After his redshirt freshman season ended last year, Cam Chambers hit the film room. The Michigan State wide receiver didn’t just evaluate his own play, he re-learned the entire offense. Chambers studied all three receiver positions and coverage concepts. He broke down the offense from the view of the quarterback, protection from the linemen and responsibilities of the running back.

Michigan State’s New Jersey natives eager to perform in front of family, friends at Rutgers
Gerald Owens was unsure of the final tally and still waiting to hear back from his dad. Cam Chambers, meanwhile, estimated the total will be between 25 and 30. Owens, a redshirt junior defensive tackle, and Chambers, a redshirt freshman wide receiver, will return to their home state of New Jersey on Saturday to play for No. 21 Michigan State (8-3, 6-2 Big Ten) in its regular-season finale at Rutgers (4-7, 3-5).

Michigan State wide receivers are young, ‘but we’re ready, too’
Cam Chambers waited and watched three of his classmates get their chance at wide receiver last season. First, Justin Layne moved to cornerback. Then Donnie Corley was dismissed from the program. Now, Chambers sees a chance to make his impact. “It was tough,” the redshirt freshman said today. “I wanted to help any time. I was eager to get out there. I was on-call and ready to go whenever I was called. ”He’s likely to hear his name very soon.

The Spartan offense will undergo major changes this season, but has young players that should step up. Brian Lewerke will begin his first year as the full-time starter at quarterback and the Spartans also have to replace a few receiving weapons. Top redshirt freshmen performers in Michigan State spring game
Michigan State had nine true freshmen see the field last year, a record during the Mark Dantonio era. With that, the Spartans have a number young players entering 2016 with some game experience. For others, they had to wait. The Spartans brought in 20 scholarship players in the 2016 class, meaning 11 of them didn’t play in a game last season. So Saturday was an introduction of sorts for them, as well. Here are redshirt freshmen who appear poised to step up following Saturday’s spring game.
