Family. That’s what it’s all about. Family is tradition.
Within the Michigan State football program, family has been a component of the brotherhood for decades. One, in particular, has donned the Green and White for three generations. The Bullough family.

Linebackers a ‘good situation’ for Mark Dantonio, Michigan State
The old saying in football goes, if you have more than one quarterback you don’t have a quarterback. Or, at least, it goes something like that. Of course, the idea is that if one doesn’t stand out, that means none of the quarterbacks will excel. That same theory doesn’t apply to the linebacker position, and at Michigan State, the feeling is the Spartans have plenty of options to anchor a defense that finished second in the nation in 2017 in rush defense, allowing just more than 95 yards a game.

Michigan State linebackers want to become best blitzers in Dantonio era
Michigan State’s group of linebackers is so deep this fall they needed a bigger meeting room. The Spartans’ linebacker meetings during the team’s preseason camp have had nearly 20 players at times. A group that size couldn’t fit in the normal linebackers room in the Duffy Daugherty Building, so the group at the center of the Spartans’ defense had to take over a room formerly occupied by the defensive line to have enough space.

Michigan State’s open LB spot has four possible starters
Linebacker remains a position of strength for Michigan State. Always has been under Mark Dantonio. For his coaching predecessors as well. And for a Spartan defense that hopes to make the leap from exceptional to elite this season, finding one more starter in the middle will be challenging. But not due to a shortage of capable linebackers. The opposite, actually.

Bullough stepping up his game ahead of final season at MSU
Michigan State has had a Bullough on its roster every season since 2010, and the youngest one has stepped up this spring as he prepares for his final year at MSU. Byron Bullough followed in his older brothers’ footsteps when he came to Michigan State in 2014. Following a redshirt season, Bullough appeared in nine games, mostly on special teams in 2015. A year later, he was limited to seven appearances because of injury before playing in all 13 games still in a somewhat limited role with 57 snaps logged def

Byron Bullough focused on making name for himself
Despite his family’s deep history at Michigan State, Byron Bullough isn’t focused on being like his brothers. Bullough’s older siblings, Max and Riley, both were former MSU captains who started at middle linebacker for the Spartans over a combined five seasons from 2011-16. They each signed NFL free-agent contracts. Replicating that success isn’t Bullough’s mission. He wants to set himself apart.

Mike Tressel always has been a high-intensity coach. That shouldn’t change now that Michigan State’s co-defensive coordinator has resumed coaching linebackers, a position group that’s expected to be among the Spartans’ deepest and most experienced this season.
