Improved leadership has been a focus for Michigan State following last season’s 3-9 record. The Spartans now have their top two voices in the locker room. Seniors Chris Frey and Brian Allen were named Michigan State’s 2017 team captains on Thursday morning, following the team’s last practice of fall camp.

Three sets of brothers give Michigan State football a family vibe
A text message popped into Mark Staten’s phone, a memory of years gone by and a reminder of what’s still to come. It was sent by Matt Allen. The Michigan State offensive lineman attached a photo of himself as a chubby, young teenager. He was standing with oldest brother, Jack, when he was about the same age at Spartan Stadium. Now, it’s Matt’s turn to put on the uniform and play alongside middle brother, senior Brian, on that same field.

Brian Allen stands 6-foot-2. The Michigan State senior offensive lineman’s weight, according to coach Mark Dantonio, fluctuates between 310 and 320 pounds, depending on what he eats for lunch.Allen doesn’t dispute that. “I can get fat real quick if I don’t watch it,” he last month. “I like to eat.”

Three Michigan State seniors to join Mark Dantonio at Big Ten Media Days
Michigan State will be represented by a trio of seniors at the 2017 Big Ten Media Days and Kickoff Luncheon in Chicago this month. Offensive lineman Brian Allen, linebacker Chris Frey and running back Gerald Holmes will accompany coach Mark Dantonio and meet with the media to discuss the upcoming season during the event, which is July 24-25 at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place.

The 2017 Football season is still a few months away but Athlon Sports is already naming their Preseason All-B1G Teams. Ohio State (14), Penn State (12), Wisconsin (12) and Northwestern (11) led the conference in players selected but three Spartans also made the cut: Brian Allen (1st team), LJ Scott (2nd team) and Chris Frey (3rd team)

Michigan State has faith in young players on rebuilt offensive line
One of Mark Dantonio’s surprise announcements following the Michigan State spring game last month was that offensive lineman Luke Campbell had “solidified” himself at right tackle. Campbell redshirted in 2016, his first season on campus, but impressed coaches enough during the practices that season and the offseason to earn himself the starting job by the end of spring practice.

New additions move quickly onto Michigan State’s offensive line
Mark Staten reflected back the spring of 2013, after Michigan State’s offensive line trudged through a 2012 season filled with injuries and lack of depth. The Spartans’ coaches theorized somebody they didn’t expect would come back that fall and become a difference-maker. Back then, it was Jack Conklin. Staten wants his young offensive linemen to learn from that story. A 3-9 season and attrition along the trenches will provide plenty of opportunity.

Three Michigan State players make ESPN’s top prospects by position
When ESPN released its top 10 NFL draft prospects by position this week, there was one spot that came as no surprise.Malik McDowell was named the top defensive tackle prospect eligible for the 2017 draft, in a list compiled by Todd McShay. The former Michigan State star, who is forgoing his final year of eligibility to enter the draft, has long been projected as a first-round pick.
