As a five-year old water boy for his brothers’ little league team, Brandon Sowards realized his desire to play football. Fast forward over 18 years and Sowards has been able to complete a childhood dream to play and start at wide receiver for MSU. However, that dream didn’t come easy. After earning a scholarship as a walk-on and excelling in the offseason and preseason camp, Sowards’ career trajectory was rerouted when he tore his ACL prior to the start of the 2017 season.

Michigan State returns starters, experienced depth at WR this season
Stewart and White, both two-year starters, are back to lead the group and there’s depth behind them. It will be up to quarterback Brian Lewerke, who is looking to bounce back after a difficult season marred by a shoulder injury, and new offensive coordinator Brad Salem to get the most out of the receivers and stretch the field, which didn’t happen nearly enough last fall.

Brandon Sowards brings ‘blue-collar’ lift to Michigan State’s injured WR group
Michigan State returned all three starting receivers from last season. Felton Davis, Darrell Stewart Jr., and Cody White combined for 140 catches for 1,767 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2017. The trio formed one of the best-receiving groups in the Big Ten and perhaps the nation. However, in early August, Michigan State wide receivers coach Terrence Samuel made sure to mention another player.

All three starters from last season return — senior Felton Davis III (55 catches in 2017), junior Darrell Stewart Jr. (50) and sophomore Cody White (35). They are diverse in style, sizable and a talented group, which began last season unproven.

WR/PR Brandon Sowards out for season with torn ACL
Brandon Sowards was the returning starter but the Spartans struggled generating yards last season and had others competing for the spot. The redshirt junior returner and wide receiver who arrived at Michigan State as a walk-on lost his starting job, as well as his whole 2017 season. A knee injury will sideline Sowards for the rest of the year, Dantonio said on Tuesday.

Michigan State has three leaders in hotly-contested competition for punt returner
Brandon Sowards is back as Michigan State’s punt returner. However, his experience alone may not be enough to keep the job. Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said during the first week of fall camp the team needs more production in punt return. There now appear to be three leaders for the position in Sowards and fellow wide receivers Darrell Stewart Jr. and Laress Nelson.
