The New Orleans Saints on Sunday announced three former Michigan State players have been signed to their practice squad. Linebackers Joe Bachie and Andrew Dowell, as well as wide receiver Bennie Fowler, were retained as practice players after being cut Saturday as NFL teams trimmed their rosters to 53.

Bennie Fowler keeps finding ways to endear himself to Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks. An undrafted free agent coming out of Michigan State, Fowler got his first break in Denver, where he’d line up alongside future Hall of Famer Peyton Manning. The past two years he was with the New York Giants, catching passes from Eli Manning (and later, Daniel Jones). Now, after being released by the Giants, Fowler is with the New Orleans Saints, and he gives all the credit to Drew Brees.

The New York Giants signed former Denver Broncos and Michigan State receiver Bennie Fowler and placed linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong and wide receiver Cody Latimer on injured reserve. Fowler ultimately was signed to the practice squad, and then made the team in 2015, catching a two-point conversion from Manning in Super Bowl 50 to cap that season. But Fowler’s chemistry with Trevor Simeien was on display Monday night, as he caught two TD passes in the Broncos’ 24-21 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Among the most notable, if sometimes overlooked, positional battles at Broncos training camp this year is at receiver, as nine players battle for the coveted No. 3 spot behind veterans Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders. Last season, Jordan Norwood took the third-most snaps at receiver, but his deal expired after an up-and-down season. “I think Bennie has that job right now,” Sanders said. “Bennie doesn’t want to lose it, but that’s Bennie’s job right now to lose if you ask me. He’s the one playing in the slot a majority of the time.”

The Colorado Spartans and the Michael Sadler Foundation teamed up for the first annual Colorado Spartans Social on Thursday evening, and some former Spartan football players were in attendance to support the foundation. Darqueze Dennard, Bennie Fowler, Taybor Pepper, Connor Kruse, and Blake Treadwell were all present for the event, which gave those who came the first opportunity to try Jagged Mountain Brewery’s new craft beer “Hey Diddle Diddle,” which was specifically made in memory of Mike Sadler.
