  • RB Anthony Williams enters transfer portal

    Michigan State running back Anthony Williams entered the transfer portal on Wednesday morning, 247Sports has learned. The sophomore running back has carried the ball four times this season for five yards, earning touches against Indiana and Iowa. Williams played in 12 games for the Spartans a year ago, finishing third on the team with 118 yards and one touchdown. He’s slipped to fifth on the Spartans running back depth chart behind Jordon Simmons, Connor Heyward, Elijah Collins, and Brandon Wright.

  • The outlook for Michigan State’s crowded backfield this season

    The team must address losses at nearly every position on both sides of the ball, but running back is not one of them. Redshirt sophomore Elijah Collins is back as the starter and the team returns every scholarship running back from the end of last season. The group even got a boost from redshirt junior Connor Heyward, who pulled his name out of the transfer portal to rejoin the program under new head coach Mel Tucker.

    “It means a lot being named the starter here at Michigan State, but you’ve got to go out there and perform,” Heyward said, “because if you don’t go out there and perform it doesn’t matter. Anybody can be named anything, but are you gonna go out there and back what you’re labeled as?”

  • Freshman Anthony Williams makes case for RB job

    Anthony Williams felt the butterflies. His first game in Spartan Stadium. Just four months removed from high school. The early enrollee may have given Michigan State a glimpse of its future at running back. Williams ran for a team-leading 26 yards on nine carries and caught three passes for 19 more yards, flashing a speed burst to the edge that stood out for the offense in a 42-26 loss to the defense in Saturday’s spring game.
