Two more Michigan State Spartans will get an opportunity to compete for an NFL job this fall, as quarterback Anthony Russo and offensive lineman Matt Allen were invited to mini-camps by the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants, respectively.

Spartans Begin Preseason Practice
The Michigan State football team opened preseason camp on Thursday morning with a two-hour practice in helmets, shorts, and jerseys on the outdoor practice fields behind the Duffy Daugherty Building. Following practice, second-year Spartan head coach Mel Tucker and several players spoke to the media about the first day and the mindset of the team heading into the season.

QB battle between Payton Thorne, Anthony Russo simmers into summer
Payton Thorne was the first player to enter Spartan Stadium and the last to leave the field Saturday. In between, the sophomore got the ball first in almost every drill and live situational work Michigan State football undertook during its final spring practice. His chemistry with his teammates showed, a few helmet slaps and fist-bumps to each member of the first-team offense as they set the pace with a hurry-up workout against the No. 1 defense. All the marks of a budding leader.

Payton Thorne and Anthony Russo traded compliments and received praises from Michigan State football’s coaches Tuesday. Who said there can’t be nicety among contestants in a quarterback competition? Yet both Thorne, who ended the 2020 season as the Spartans’ starter, and graduate transfer Russo outwardly speak of being more invested in making individual improvements right now during MSU’s spring practice than worrying about what the other guy is doing.

Russo and Thorne are the frontrunners to win the competition, which could stretch into the fall.
