Alyza Winston emerged as one of the top performers on the Michigan State women’s basketball team last season while becoming part of a promising core of talent. Now she is no longer a part of the Spartan program. Winston has entered the transfer portal just ahead of Thursday’s Big Ten home opener against Illinois. She had started all 10 games this season for the Spartans (6-4) and was the team’s second-leading scorer at 12.2 points per game.

Winston, a Muskegon High School senior, pulled a mild surprise by committing to Michigan State during her announcement party Thursday night in a full room at Lakeshore Fitness Center.
