The Detroit Free Press has confirmed that former Michigan State basketball star Adreian Payne has died. The former Spartan played four seasons for the Spartans and was a first round pick of the Atlanta Hawks in the 2014 NBA draft. He was 31 years old.

Michigan State record book: Nobody can hold on to Spartans’ blocks record
Poor Matt Steigenga. The former Michigan State forward, who now serves as a color analyst on the team’s radio broadcasts, set the Spartans’ career record for blocked shots in 1992, with 97. The record stood firm for more than a decade and a half. But now, 12 years after his record fell, Steigenga isn’t even among the top 10 shot blockers in program history.

Adreian Payne signs NBA deal after turning down team in China
Rather than take his talents to China, Adreian Payne is going staying stateside for another shot in the NBA. The former Michigan State big man signed a two-way contract with the Orlando Magic, the team announced Monday. A two-way contract means Payne will play with the Magic’s G-League affiliate but can also spend up to 45 days with the NBA club. Teams can sign two players to two-way contracts in addition to the 15-man roster.

Adreian Payne out indefinitely with blood disorder
The Minnesota Timberwolves say forward Adreian Payne is out indefinitely with a blood condition. The Timberwolves announced the diagnosis on Tuesday night. They say that Payne has thrombocytopenia, or low platelet count. The condition can cause bleeding, bruising and slow blood clotting after injury. Payne is receiving care from team doctors. The team says he has a good prognosis for recovery and can return to the court when that happens.

Spartans in the NBA: An Update
As the NBA All-Star break approaches, the season is heating up. There are lots of great storylines: Giannis Antetokounmpo has suddenly become a top-10 player, the revamped Warriors are still a sight to behold and Russell Westbrook is averaging a triple-double (and still somehow not the MVP favorite!) My favorite storyline, year in and year out, is checking in on the Michigan State Spartans in the NBA.
