Couch: Danton Cole must rescue MSU hockey from the abyss
Who knows where Michigan State’s hockey program would be if Danton Cole had been hired as its coach six years ago. He wanted the job then. He’s always wanted the job. And always might be understating it. Cole was a more logical choice than Tom Anastos in 2011. He was the fan’s choice — one of them, at least — and the hockey world’s suggested choice. In hindsight, probably a better choice.

Making the Case for Danton Cole
Danton Cole has enjoyed tremendous success with the US National Development program since taking over in 2013. Cole is an MSU alum and enjoyed a more or less successful career in the NHL. Most of Cole’s allure comes from the players he has coached in the program that are playing at the next level. A lot of Cole’s success is evident in the success of his players as they graduate and move on from the development program.

You can’t win seven games in your sixth year and survive. Not when you’ve lost your fan base — your most ardent supporters angry, the rest apathetic.Nothing we wrote in the Lansing State Journal over the last couple years was read less online than stories written about Michigan State hockey. High school water polo was a hotter read. That is, unless, the story was about coach Tom Anastos’ job security.

Replacing a Hockey Coach: What Should Michigan State Do Next?
Tom Anastos is indeed out after an underwhelming stint at his Alma Mater. Although officially he stepped down, I have a feeling that Anastos was given that opportunity thanks to his loyalty to the school and the program. Regardless of his track record behind the bench, he is a Spartan through and through. Michigan State will join Nebraska-Omaha, Northern Michigan, and Niagra on the coaching search (so far). It’s not completely unreasonable to assume that State could compete with any of those programs for top-candidates.
