Michigan State followed an early bye week last September with a win at Notre Dame. Two seasons ago, a bye preceded an upset loss at Nebraska in November for the Spartans’ only defeat of the regular season. “I don’t know that there’s any perfect time and I don’t know that there’s any bad time, I guess I’d say,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said of a bye. “So, we just take it as it comes.”

“Does it help or not?” Dantonio asked. “Maybe you get a head start on them, but maybe you disrupt what we have going. There’s a little bit of both ends of that spectrum I think. We’ll just take advantage of whatever time we have, whichever way it goes, and we’ll be ready to play.”
