Payton Thorne was committed to play at Western Michigan for coach Tim Lester, a family friend, and with receiver Jayden Reed, his friend and former high school teammate. Then Michigan State called and he made the drive from suburban Chicago to East Lansing for a visit. In two weeks, he went from receiving an offer from the Spartans to signing a national letter of intent.
