Fitzgerald was hired Dec. 1 to replace Jonathan Smith and Michigan State lost more than 40 players to the portal from a team coming off four straight losing seasons. The newcomers range from the Big Ten and SEC to FCS and Division II. Although Fitzgerald wants to build the program through high school recruiting – the team also added 15 early enrollees from the 2026 signing class – the Spartans needed to plug holes after heavy departures, including 11 offensive lineman and 10 defensive backs.
