Slade was selected by the Pittsburgh Maulers with the second pick of the ninth round (No. 65 overall) in the USFL draft on Feb. 21. He was one of two former Spartans drafted that day, following offensive tackle Jarrett Horst who went No. 1 overall to the Michigan Panthers. Although the Maulers own Slade’s rights in the USFL with the season starting April 15 and that’s essentially a solid backup plan right now, he hasn’t lost focus. “The goal is still NFL,” Slade said. “For sure.”
