After wearing No. 5 last season, Reed was officially moved to No. 1 when Michigan State unveiled its updated spring roster in March. It was last worn from 2001-02 by All-American wide receiver Charles Rogers, who died in November 2019 at the age of 38. Prior to this season, only a dozen Spartans have worn the number, including former standout receivers Andre Rison and Muhsin Muhammad. Ronald Williams, a cornerback who transferred from Alabama to Michigan State in May, will also wear No. 1 this season.
