Fossum, who as a 19-year-old beat legendary golfer Babe Didrikson-Zaharias in a heads-up match and later went on to become the first women’s golf coach at Michigan State, died Sunday. She was 93. Fossum coached at Michigan State from 1973, alongside husband and men’s coach Bruce Fossum, until her retirement in 1997, when Slobodnik-Stoll took over the program — where she remains today. Fossum was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 2002.
