The training wheels are off, and Tom Izzo’s new-look Michigan State basketball team is starting to look like the last few versions. Crisp ball movement. Balanced scoring. Defensively dominant. The 12th-ranked Spartans rolled all of those elements into a 26-0 run that covered the final 7:12 of the first half and first almost 4 minutes of the second to down Notre Dame on Saturday night, 80-70, at Breslin Center.

There were no fans to chant it, so Michigan State players did it themselves. Someone had to cheer on the defensive display the Spartans put on Saturday night. Michigan State clamped down and ran away from Notre Dame in a 80-70 win at the Breslin Center.

The Breslin Center has an eerie feel to it without its normal plethora of screaming fans and green and white Izzone pride. But, that didn’t stop the No. 13 Michigan State men’s basketball team (2-0) from fighting the Notre Dame Irish (0-1) and claiming that shiny gold 80-70 win at the end of the rainbow.

Notre Dame’s Nate Laszewski finished off a three-point play with 7:12 left in the first half to give his team a 26-22 lead on No. 13 Michigan State. The Fighting Irish wouldn’t score again until the 18:05 mark of the second half, when Cormac Ryan sank a pair of free throws.
