MSU’s hockey team is 8-7-1 overall heading into this weekend’s home series with Arizona State (7 p.m. Saturday, 5 p.m. Sunday), which sits at No. 9 in the all-important Pairwise Rankings. On its own, MSU’s overall record only shows a slight uptick, from 6-9-1 through 16 games last season and 7-8-1 at this point two years ago, Danton Cole’s first season as the Spartans’ coach. Like that record two years ago, this year’s overall mark is an outlier. Only now, all the other data suggests MSU is in the middle of a strong push back toward college hockey relevancy.
