The Spartans returned eight starters from a veteran group that was one of the best in the nation while losing cornerback Justin Layne and safety Khari Willis to the NFL draft and graduating Andrew Dowell, a three-year starter at weak-side linebacker. However, the production has dropped off and defensive coordinator Mike Tressel noted a different shift from last year.
