One practice into his Michigan State career, Kirk Cousins was ready to go home. Back to Holland and his small-school roots at Hope College. Back to focusing on becoming a doctor instead of football. “It didn’t go well,” Cousins recalled. “I couldn’t spit out the plays, I couldn’t get the snap count right, I missed reads. The challenge of learning an entirely new playbook was very real. Walking off the practice field that day, I was considering transferring back to the small Division III school in my hometown, as that felt like more where I belonged.”
