As a senior at Pershing, Simpson averaged 36 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.4 assists. However, Simpson will likely be most remembered for his junior season in 1967. That year, Simpson played for arguably the best high school basketball team in state history. Playing alongside fellow Retro Mr. Basketball winner Spencer Haywood (1967), Pershing lost one game that year — a buzzer beater against Detroit Northwestern in the city championship.
