Loyer has a bundle of memories that revolve around basketball because of his father, John, who played for and later coached with Bob Huggins at Akron and Cincinnati before moving to a career in the NBA. Loyer was barely walking when his father became an assistant coach at Portland. From there it was off to Philadelphia, the New Jersey Nets and the Pistons, where John was an assistant and went 8-24 as interim head coach in 2014 after Maurice Cheeks was fired.
