Seven weeks into the season, it’s safe to say Michigan State’s defense is good — if not great. MSU ranks fourth nationally in total defense (262.1 ypg), eighth in run defense (93.4 ypg), ninth in passing yards allowed (168.7 ypg) and 14th in scoring defense (16.9 ppg). Across the board, the Spartans have been much better than a year ago, and that includes a drastic difference in third-down defense.
