As one of the top picks to win the NCAA tournament last year, the returning Michigan State basketball team coupled with the highly talented freshman class was expected to be a top contender for the 2017 title. Things took an unexpected twist when the injury bug hit the Spartans early in the season and they lost big men Gavin Schilling and Ben Carter for the year. The lack of big men has been a persistent problem the Spartans have battled with a lot falling on the shoulders of freshman forward Nick Ward and red-shirt sophomore forward Kenny Goins who has battled injuries himself.
