In record-setting fashion, the Michigan State women's golf team is heading to the NCAA Championships. Needing a top-eight finish at the 24-team NCAA East Regional to reach nationals, the Spartans vaulted from 12th place to a tie for sixth in the third and final round Saturday after carding 5-under-par 283, tying for the second-best round in program history. MSU finished the 54-hole tournament with a 23-over 887 (300-304-283).

Bring up the NCAA Tournament and the year 1979 around East Lansing, and the reaction is predictable. It was that spring that Earvin "Magic" Johnson helped lead Michigan State to its first basketball national championship. That year has become synonymous with championship basketball for Spartans fans. But there was another NCAA milestone that season, one that took place only a few months later and only a Kirk Gibson home run from Jenison Field House.

Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo didn’t enter this past season with sky-high expectations for the Spartans, but under his direction, the team ended up capturing a Big Ten championship and a top seed in the NCAA tournament. “We adjusted our goals as we went,” Izzo said Friday while serving as the keynote speaker for Davenport University’s Excellence in Business fundraising gala. “The reason we did -- tremendous leadership.”

Michigan State Spartans basketball followers have been spoiled since Tom Izzo took over as coach. It's possible they're one of the most comfortable and confident fanbases in all of sports. Six Final Fours, and a national title -- constantly running toward Big Ten titles -- have made the Michigan State faithful expect nothing but the best each season.
