Michigan was emphatic in every way on Saturday in East Lansing. The Wolverines left no doubt about their intentions – and a 21-7 dominating victory over Michigan State might have even suggested that they consider Michigan State a rival after all.

In hindsight, as Javon Ringer looks back, there were signs on Oct. 25, 2008, that something was about to turn in Michigan State’s football rivalry with Michigan. In the locker room after the Spartans’ 35-21 win — their first over the Wolverines in seven years and first in Ann Arbor since 1990 — the celebration became a directive.

The Paul Bunyan Trophy, which has called East Lansing its rightful home for eight of the past ten seasons, is once again up for grabs. This is the first year, I believe, that Michigan State’s football team can lose to Michigan without eating crow. That’s not to say losing wouldn’t crush the Spartans or sting their fans, or preclude an uncouth Wolverine from rubbing it in at the water cooler on Monday. But, by and large, the Spartans have finally won themselves out of the perpetual argument that their control of this rivalry is a fluke.

Mark Dantonio’s first taste of the rivalry between Michigan State and Michigan came more than two decades ago. It was 1995 and he was in his first season as the Spartans’ secondary coach under Nick Saban when they upset No. 7 Michigan on a cold early-November day in East Lansing. That planted the seed.

If you’re looking for an explanation as to why MSU wins its share of big games and U-M does not, it’s because of plays like Bachie’s, or Felton Davis’. The one where the Spartans’ senior receiver stretched out to haul in a 31-yard catch that set up the game-winning touchdown.   At U-M, those plays have too often gone the other way.

How it happened: MSU upsets rival Michigan 14-10 Spartan Tailgate
Michigan State didn’t pick up a first down in the second half until there were less than three minutes remaining and totaled 66 yards of offense in the final 30 minutes Saturday at Michigan Stadium. Thanks to a dominant defense that forced five turnovers and allowed scores on only the drives of each half, that was all the Spartans needed in a 14-10 upset win over No. 7 Michigan in the first ever night game between the two in-state rivals.

In sometimes-monsoon conditions, Michigan State brought the storm to No. 7 Michigan. And survived one. And a bobbled snap once again provided the Spartans with a memorable play. Facing third-and-3 with 2:13 to play, Brian Lewerke dropped a shotgun snap, picked it up off the turf and took off to his left. The sophomore quarterback dove, rolling over center Brian Allen and Michigan’s James Hudson. It was just MSU’s second first down of the second half. But it was enough to snatch a second straight win at Michigan Stadium.

Sure, a second-half deluge was a factor. But either way, the Spartans were the better team getting two first-half touchdowns and holding on before more than 112,000.

Michigan State will travel to Ann Arbor Saturday night to face archrival Michigan. Lately, it seems like the battle for Paul Bunyan is one of those games that doesn’t look very close on paper, but is. Last year, Michigan was a 21-point favorite over the Spartans but only won by nine. In 2015, Michigan was a 6.5-point favorite but lost by four.

This rivalry is real and intense. The Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines are not fond of each other and this game should be a hard-hitting, classic Big Ten matchup. Regular Michigan fans are confident that their team will pick up the win this week, and the Wolverines are heavy favorites. However, I am under the impression that this game will be closer than most think.
