5. Michigan State: I'm a bit leery to put Michigan State this high after 2009, but Jones' decision to return eased some concerns about the defense. The Spartans must get better on both lines and in the secondary, and quarterback Kirk Cousins needs to rebound after a rough finish to his sophomore season. Recruits William Gholston and Max Bullough should help the defense right away.

Michigan State fell from fifth to 10th in the Associated Press men's college basketball poll released Monday. The Spartans (19-5) lost twice last week -- at Wisconsin on Tuesday and at Illinois on Saturday.

Yup, MSU has moved back up to #5 in the Jan 25, 2010 USA Today Poll, just released (below). As for Jeff Sagarin, MSU is #12 (Wisconsin #11, Purduet #9, Ohio State #23, scUM #89); at collegerpi.com, MSU is #14 (Purdue #12, Wisconsin #10, Ohio State #46, scUm #114; at Bracketology, MSU remains #2E (Purdue #4W, Wisconsin #4, Ohio State #7S).

The ES wuz right on, MSU is up to #7 AP/#8 USA Today in the latest men's basketball poll. I posted the AP poll below. And, in Bracketology, the Big Green move up to a #2 seed in the South: Lunardi only has four Big Ten teams in his field: MSU (#2S) , Purdue (#2W), Wisconsin (#3MW), and Minnesota (#7E).
