WMU is undergoing a lot of change on both sides of the ball, meaning a potential upset over a Big Ten foe right out of the gate is not likely. Michigan State did manage to go to a post-New Year's Day bowl, although few fans around East Lansing would consider the 2009 campaign a success. Expect Cousins to spread the ball around, and Jones to wreak havoc on the defensive side of the ball.

Most people would agree that Dantonio deserves some credit for leaving behind good players and habits for Kelly at Cincinnati. In the same breath, let's again acknowledge John L. Smith for what he left Dantonio at MSU. For all the heat Smith's recruiting took, I'm pretty sure Dantonio appreciated inheriting Javon Ringer, Devin Thomas, Ervin Baldwin, Kellen Davis, etc., etc.

Football season is upon us, and it is only natural for Michigan State fans to make predictions for the Spartans. Optimism is high. It is difficult to find an MSU a fan who thinks MSU will do worse than 8-4. Many Spartans faithful are expecting 10-2. Are these lofty expectations warranted?

One of the more remarkable aspects of MSU's 2009 football season was the seemingly complete reversal in offensive styles. The 2008 team usually employed a positively paleolithic approach, wherein the object was to give the ball to Javon Ringer as often as possible and have Brian Hoyer throw the ball only as a change of pace. Conversely, the 2009 offense, particularly later in the season, was built on an impressive passing game and seemed to run only as an afterthought.

The last season in which Michigan State's men's soccer team had more than one senior on the roster, 2008, the Spartans won the Big Ten regular season and tournament championships. This year, with another senior-laden team, MSU has a genuine chance to take the title again.
