The 1998 football season did not begin with a flourish for Michigan State. Crushing losses at home against Colorado State and at Oregon left the Spartans reeling before they returned to Spartan Stadium to play No. 10 Notre Dame for a primetime contest in front of a national television audience. Led by quarterback Bill Burke, the Spartans didn't cower in the national spotlight. They dismantled the Irish, 45-23. It was a chapter in the schools' storied history the Irish would love to forget but one that Burke relishes.
