Freshman Fred Smith admitted he was a little nervous going into Friday's first day of practice in full pads at Michigan State. One quick pop took care of that. "I was a little nervous, but I was excited also," Smith said. "Once you get that first hit, you think 'It's not so bad, I can deal with it. It's cool.' " Smith and fellow receiver Keshawn Martin are two of the first-year players who have stood out to coaches during the Spartans' first week of practice.
