The Spartans ended a very good season on a high note, rallying to force overtime against Georgia in the Outback Bowl and winning in dramatic fashion during the third extra session. Mark Dantonio recorded his first bowl win as Spartans coach and quarterback Kirk Cousins went out on top, but the MSU defense carried the day in Tampa. Although the Spartans didn't win the Big Ten title, they looked like the league's top squad during the bowl season and could be the conference favorite entering 2012.

Michigan State defensive end Marcus Rush, who ranked third on the team in tackles for loss (12 for 45 yards) and sacks (4 for 23 yards), has been named Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America. Rush is one of two Big Ten players selected to the 28-man team, joining Northwestern safety Ibraheim Campbell.

Former Saginaw High star DeAnthony Arnett announced Wednesday that he will play for Michigan State University. Arnett was granted his release Tuesday from the University of Tennessee after catching 24 passes as a true freshman. Arnett asked for his release so that he could play closer to his family, including his father (William Arnett) who has faced some serious medical problems, including heart surgery and dialysis.

Instead of taking Jim Delany's idea of naming the conference trophy after a coach who was very successful 70 years ago with a school that hasn't been part of the Big Ten in 50 years, I think we'll pursue a more modern award name or at least a more Spartan one. Our awards will be called the Perles trophies. When MSU wins it's next Rose Bowl, the name will be updated to the Mark Dantonio award.

If there is one thing these Spartans have, especially its seniors, it is tremendous character. In its off-field honors — Cousins and Arthur Ray Jr. — to its on-field effort, they do not lack in defined character and it is not in them to shy away from long odds. And that is exactly what they faced.

In the moments after Michigan State’s win against Georgia in the Outback Bowl, Keith Nichol, Michigan State’s senior wide receiver from Lowell, was a hugger and philosopher. He had hugged the ball to his chest on a big touchdown catch in the second half of Monday’s 33-30 triple-overtime win against Georgia, and the realization that his college football career was ending was hitting home as he talked to the media.
