Another person that Izzo has turned to regarding NBA jobs in the past is Louisville coach Rick Pitino, who went through five losing seasons out of the six he coached in the league.

Of course, MSU will have a gaping hole to fill without do-everything Draymond Green. It's possible, however, that the Spartans could be more explosive. With freshman big men Matt Costello and Kenny Kaminski in the mix -- Nix's honorific for Costello, Michigan's Mr. Basketball, is "nasty white boy," -- MSU should be able to continue the inside-out play that proved so valuable this season.

The key challenge for Michigan State in 2012-13 will be replacing Green. This doesn't mean finding another Green, which is good news. There is no way to find another 6-foot-6 wide body with a 24-carat smile who suddenly starts sinking 15-foot fade-aways as a senior and does not stop talking, ever. But Michigan State needs to replace what Green brought to the team. That means replacing his leadership and rebounding.

The locker room was lifeless, depressed, with quiet answers to quiet questions and a few tears mixed in. That’s how it is at the end of a college basketball season, for everyone but the national champion. Amid the angst of Michigan State’s season-ending 57-44 loss to Louisville in Thursday’s Sweet 16, some young Spartans already were thinking about the work to create a happier ending.
