Under Coach George Makris, Spartan boxers dominated opponents at regional and national competitions, achieving two NCAA national team championships (1951 and 1955) and nine individual NCAA titles. Opening Day is set for Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. as the Spartans take on Big East favorite and 11th-ranked St. John's at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium in Dunedin, Fla. The Michigan State women's golf team wrapped up action at the Regional Challenge Wednesday at the Palos Verdes Country Club with a third-round score of 315. The Spartans finished in ninth place at the elite 15-team tournament with a 914 (302-297-315). All 15 teams in the field were ranked in the Golfweek Top 50, including 10 in the Top 25.
