A forgettable season for the MSU softball team ended Saturday with more blunder than bang as the Spartans dropped their 19th consecutive game in a weekend-series sweep by Indiana. MSU ended its 2012 campaign losing 26 of its last 27 contests and finished the season winless in Big Ten competition. The team finished 11-42 on the season with its last victory coming on a 6-1 decision at Central Michigan on April 4.

Gary Harris may be the higher-rated player coming to Michigan State, but Denzel Valentine might end up being more exciting to watch. Valentine, formerly of Lansing Sexton, is a four-star shooting guard who has been compared to legendary Spartans phenom Magic Johnson. Valentine was arguably the best prep player in Michigan in 2012, but he didn't win the title of Mr. Basketball.

MSU, the four-time defending varsity eight champion, saw Michigan break its four-year stranglehold on the varsity eight gold medal. The Wolverines claimed the overall team title, in addition to gold medals in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight. Each of the Wolverine boats medaled on the day.

In record-setting fashion, the Michigan State women's golf team is heading to the NCAA Championships. Needing a top-eight finish at the 24-team NCAA East Regional to reach nationals, the Spartans vaulted from 12th place to a tie for sixth in the third and final round Saturday after carding 5-under-par 283, tying for the second-best round in program history. MSU finished the 54-hole tournament with a 23-over 887 (300-304-283).
